VIBROTYPE.

Paleut granted March IGtb, 1880.

MY NEW PROCESS of pliotographing through heated (vibrating) air produces a negative, where freckled faces, cliaracteristic lieads witli marked features, especially elderly people, appear remarkably soft and artistic. It does not resemble a map of their faces, and the retouching, so injurious to the portrait, is reduced to a minimum.

ruoM

SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY & ST. NICHOLAS.

Totlie renders of Sgribnek and St. Nicholas, who have taken an interest in the l)eautitul illustrations which have reeenth' appeared in these magazines, there can be no more satisfactory Holiday gift than the " Portfolio of Proofs," containing fifty of the most inter- esting ami valuable of recently published, or yet to be published, pictures from these two periodicals, printed on separate sheets of heavy paper (size H)}i x 13), laid loosely in a hanclsome portfolio, and ready for frajning, Three months; have beeji spent in the preparation of

The Limited Edition of Fifteen Hundred Copies.

Among the Pictures in this collection are some of the choicest of the Millet pic- tures,— the beautifully engraved "Sower," portraits of Millet and Mme. Millet (the latter richly printed in color), "The Shepherdess," and several others; portraits of Edgar Allen Poe, Savonarola, Duveneck, Gladstone, Peter the G-reat, John G. Whittier, Whistler's Mother, Walt Whitman. Seymour Haden. Joseph Jefferson as Bob Acres, Mme. Eistori, and others; "The Princes in the Tower," by Millais, from St. Nich- oIjAS; "A Russian Nun;" Vedder's "The Lost Mind : " several marvelously accurate reproductions of Seymour Haden's etchings ; " The Reconnaissance, " by de Neuvillo; Mary Hallock Foote's " Girl of the Mexican Camp : " "Young Russian Gii'l in Ancient Dress," from the December Scejbnee ; "A Sv,-eedish Queen-Mother," from the January number : "The Madonna of the Lily " by da Vinci, from the Chkistmas St. Nicholas, etc., etc. In addition to the artists of the above, Abbey, John La Farge, William Blake, Vanderhoof, Dabour, George Inness, Jr., Francis Lathrop, Moran, Homer Martin, and otherg are represented. Cole is the engraver of sixteen of the Pictures, while Henry Marsh, Kruell, Closson, Miss Powell, Whitney, Bogert, Muller, and King are among the other engravers whose work is here seen 'at its very best.

The collection is issued in an elegant case, and sold at the low price of $5.00, or only ten cents for each picture. No set can be broken, and the proofs will be sold only in full sets, which the publishers Avill send prepaid to any address 0!i receipt of the price, or they may 1je had of book-sellers generally. One-third of the entire edition has already been ordered from England, and of those offered for sale in America, many were en- gaged several months before publication.

The following are extracts from some letters and press notices

REGARDING LAST YEAR'S " PORTFOLIO."

Philip Gilbert Hamebton. " I have looked throngh these proofs .over and over again, with the keenest pleasure, in following the surprisingly varied skill of the artists. They quite surpass all Europeans in variety of interpretative l)ovv^er."

Spbingfield Republican.

"It is notably the handsomest of all the holiday gift books. No one with a taste for art, or merely natural liking for the pictorial, could fail to be de- lighted with this gilt."

The Sta^jdabd, London.

"It is impossible for an Englishman to look through this collection of engravings without a deep feeling of humiliation. That we may possess artists capable of drawing, and engravers capable of cutting such exquisite work as that exhibited by these one hundred and two engravings, all taken from the pages of a monthly magazinn and a serial for the young, is possible, nay, probable ; but that they do not produce such work as this is equally the fact.''
